Award-winning comic Jenny Wynter launches comedy web series: ‘How Me Parent Good’
Brisbane comedienne, mother and step-parent of six children, Jenny Wynter, is fighting back against a sea of parenting advice with a new web series poking fun at the ‘how to be a perfect parent’ movement.
“From the moment I fell pregnant, I was struck by all the books, blogs, articles, podcasts and vodcasts, selling the message ‘this is how you can be an amazing parent,’ ” said Jenny.
“We’re constantly seeing polished, carefully-lit Instagram posts showing ridiculously attractive people doting on their perfectly behaved offspring. You either have to despair at never measuring up, or laugh at the absurdity.
“This web series was born from trying to do the latter.
“It’s my reaction to the plethora of ‘experts’ offering advice and ‘look how good I am’ posts on social media.”
After winning the ABC Pitch Perfect Award in 2016 at the Melbourne Web Festival, and a Writers’ Residency at Marseille Web Fest, Jenny decided to make a parenting themed web series.
“Marseille Web Fest opened my eyes to a whole new world of bringing your ideas to audiences,” said Jenny.
“Web series is absolutely where it’s at.”
Jenny secured funding from Moreton Bay Regional Council, Brisbane Touchwood Productions signed up and
‘How Me Parent Good: And You Can Too!’, a six-episode series taking a humorous look at parenting was born.
“It’s comic relief from the relentlessness of parenthood and a chance to laugh at the absurdity of taking it all too seriously,” said Jenny.
Jenny will launch How Me Parent Good with a mothering themed comedy gala at the Sit Down Comedy Club on Mother’s Day weekend. The line-up is:
- Kat Davidson (MC)
- Jenny Wynter
- Jasmine Fairbairn
- Emily Kristopher
“Somehow we’ve turned perfect parenting into a competitive sport,” said Jenny. “I wanted to make a series that would appeal to my friends who are mums – they’re women who aren’t afraid to let it all hang out and find comfort in laughing with each other about the shit bits.’
